The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Trust' in Youngster Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, including five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a teenage makes club history in a crucial European match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first-leg lead at the Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted the Madrid side overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight berth.

At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the side.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to practice with the senior squad and gave him minutes in pre-season.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against Benfica that led to the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you go to train and each day you have a game," said the player after his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.

The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and experience.

"He is a very quick footballer, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He is incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.

"His standout trait is his personality," continued he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.

"I realize fans might be astonished to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It is delightful to have a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through local academies before joining the club's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

According to international regulations, players may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a official senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the quarter-finals.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are watching his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Yamal. While teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Focus on the Future

For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at the Etihad, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club chase future success.

After his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I attempt not to think about it too much - I must earn my minutes on the field," he commented after the win at Etihad Stadium.
