The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing personal histories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on Spotify and the video site.
