The fast bowler Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. If not, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
