The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part series written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The previous season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the background, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the AC-12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

The drama premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced exactly the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
