Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution

Democratic officials demonstrated outrage after the ex-president charged a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and declared they should be arrested and penalized "through capital punishment" following their publication of a disputed video.

The Message That Triggered the Debate

The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, features six Democratic elected officials who formerly acted in armed forces or intelligence capacities.

"As we did, you all swore an vow to protect and uphold this national charter," the officials stated in the 90-second video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from right here at home. Our laws are unambiguous, you can decline improper directives, you can reject unlawful commands, you should decline unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that contravene the law or our constitution."

Trump's Angry Reply

The clip seemed to provoke a furious reply from the previous commander-in-chief.

On the following morning, Trump posted on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional publication, he wrote: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their comments cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third post, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a declaration that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Officials Respond

Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Democratic leadership released a joint announcement denouncing the statements.

"Violent politics has no place in America," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all acted our nation with great loyalty and honor. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous threats of violence against members of Congress, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to strongly do the same."

The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in contact with law enforcement "to guarantee the security of these representatives and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must right away remove these extreme digital publications and withdraw his aggressive language before he leads to violence," the announcement continued.

Lawmakers' Strong Reaction

The lawmakers who were featured in the video also released a statement.

"We are veterans and defense specialists who care for this country and made an pledge to protect and uphold the national charter of the United States," they said. "Our pledge is permanent, and we plan to honor it. No warning, pressure, or call for violence will deter us from that fundamental responsibility."

"What's most telling is that the former president considers it subject to penalty by death for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their protection as they execute their vow to the constitution and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our obligation."

They continued: "Every American must come together and denounce the former president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for moral clarity."

Further Governmental Responses

The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and shared on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the death of public representatives."

He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. All senators, all representatives, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and unconditionally."

The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "treason", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", commenting: "This constitutes very dangerous, you have leading members of the legislature telling military personnel to disobey orders, I think that is unprecedented in US history."

The Conservative representative also reportedly told journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the offense of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the terminology and establish all that."

Administration Response

During a administration briefing on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a reporter, "Would the president want to kill elected officials?", the White House press secretary answered: "Absolutely not."

"Let's be clear about what the former president is responding to," the representative declared. "We see sitting members of the federal government who conspired to organize a video message to members of the US military, to current military personnel advising them to defy the commander in chief's legal commands."

She said: "The sanctity of our armed forces rests on the chain of command, and if that structure is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are essentially supporting."
